TIMMINS - Is your smoke alarm working?
Smoke alarms: Make them work for you is the theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week.
The small devices make a big difference in an emergency.
The National Fire Protection Association says that a working smoke alarm reduces the risk of death by half in a home fire.
For the annual awareness week, the Timmins Fire Department is sharing these smoke alarm safety tips:
- Install fire alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level of the home, including the basement.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
- Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
Look out for members of the local department around town this week to talk about fire safety and the importance of working fire alarms. Here's where they'll be:
