TIMMINS - Seniors spending the holidays in the hospital got some gifts and a boost from Timmins volunteers.
As part of the Rotary Club of Timmins-Porcupine’s Adopt a Senior project, volunteers delivered personal care packages including puzzles, blankets, skin care products and holiday treats, to seniors at the Timmins and District Hospital (TADH) and St. Mary’s Gardens.
More than 70 gift packs were delivered to TADH, and 38 seniors at St. Mary’s received gifts through the Adopt a Senior partnership with Plan A Senior Care Staffing and Recruitment.
“We’re incredibly grateful for our community partners who are helping to bring smiles to seniors who can’t be at home for the holidays,” said Anne-Marie Sorsa, Hospital Elder Life Program elder life specialist, in a news release.
“We’ve taken the time to personalize many of the packages, so that the older adult patients are receiving things to both help engage them in hospital, as well as bring them comfort.”
The packages were delivered on Dec. 21 and 22 after over 30 volunteers gathered at the hospital to put the packages together.
This is the fifth year for Plan A’s Adopt a Senior program and the fourth year for Rotary’s.
“It’s been such a wonderful project — I look forward to it each year,” said June Woodburn, Rotary community chair. “The support from the community has been tremendous. So many people dropped off bags full of gifts.”
On top of the deliveries to the hospital, the Rotary Club of Timmins-Porcupine has organized gifts for those in long-term care homes across the city.
“This is an important initiative for our community and club,” said Rotary Club president Ross MacIvor. “Seeing how these packages make a difference really drives home the holiday spirit.”
