Work to demolish the Hollinger office building has started.
The windows are gone from the more than 100-year-old building and crews have also been working to remove the roof.
Goldcorp communications and corporate social responsibility co-ordinator Pierre Noel said it’s a slow process to allow for asbestos abatement procedures and the structure’s integrity.
The three-storey office at the intersection of Highway 655 and Algonquin was built in 1915 and was the headquarters of the Hollinger Mine until it closed in 1968.
Last week, Noel told TimminsToday that many long-standing issues, including asbestos and high operating costs, led to the decision to condemn and take down the building.
This is the second historic mining building to be demolished in recent weeks.
Last week, the mine manager’s house on Gold Mine Road was torn down.
