Impaired charge laid in New Year's Eve snowmobile crash

Police say the driver suffered life-altering injuries

MATTICE-VAL CÔTÉ - The driver of a snowmobile involved in a New Year's Eve crash has been charged with impaired.

On Dec. 31, 2024, around 10:30 p.m, James Bay OPP and paramedics responded to a call for an injured snowmobiler on Third Street North in Mattice.

The driver, a 22-year-old man from Mattice, suffered life-altering injuries in the single-vehicle crash. 

He is charged with: 

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol
  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Fail to wear proper helmet
  • Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Hearst on May 28. His licence was also suspended for 90 days. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
