There are events in Timmins and Kirkland Lake this weekend to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

The Timmins Police Service and Kirkland Lake OPP are each holding a Tree of Hope lighting ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The Timmins event starts at 7 p.m. at the police station, 185 Spruce St. S.

In Kirkland Lake, the event is being held at the OPP detachment, 26 Duncan Ave. N., at 7 p.m. It's being held in collaboration with Beaverhouse First Nation and Matachewan First Nation.

The Tree of Hope campaign was started in 2019 by the Thunder Bay Police.

It has grown to include dozens of communities lighting trees across Ontario to honour MMIWG2S and raise awareness of the issues Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people face.
