MOONBEAM - A domestic dispute that led to theTrans Canada Highway being closed for 12 hours has ended and the province's police watch dog has been called in after an officer fired his gun.
Around 8:30 p.m. yesterday (Sept. 20), OPP responded to a call on Elaine Street in Smooth Rock Falls.
During the investigation, police say ther was an interaction between and officer and person on Highway 11 about five kilometres east of Moonbeam. It led the road being closed for about 12 hours, reopening this morning around 10 a.m.
The mandate of the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in.
The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates police-involved incidents where there has been a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
The SIU has released preliminary incident report.
It says that police responded to a domestic dispute and the man left the residence in a vehicle before police arrived. When police tried to stop the vehicle and block it on Highway 11 east of Moonbeam, the man drove into the police vehicle. An officer fired his gun at the vehicle and the man fled on foot. The man did not receive any injuries from the firearm.
Around 2 p.m. today, one person was taken into police custody.
The investigation is ongoing and includes the OPP emergency response team (ERT), canine unit, crime unit and forensic identification services.
Because the SIU is involved, the OPP say they won't be providing more information.
Three SIU investigators and two forensic investigators are assigned to the case.
