The province's police watchdog has invoked its mandate after in relation to the end of a manhunt, in which an officer was shot.

This afternoon (June 12), OPP apprehended 43-year-old Lucas MacDonald, who police had been looking for since May 23. Police believe he has information on the Matheson-area murder of 30-year-old Marcel Thoma.

During an interaction on a Nighthawk Lake island, OPP says an officer was shot and MacDonald was taken into custody. Nighthawk Lake is located in the east end of Timmins off of Highway 101 on the way towards Connaught.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in connection with the investigation.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates police-involved incidents where there has been a death, serious injury, allegations of sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Because the SIU is now involved, OPP won't be releasing any further details.

Anyone with information about the investigation should call OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
