Police say two people were killed in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 11, just south of Temagami last night. One vehicle was a transport truck.
The crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. south of Temagami and closed Highway 11 north in both directions between Cedar Heights Road in North Bay and the junction of Highway 65 in New Liskeard.
OPP reported one fatality at the scene. This morning, police confirmed two people were killed in the collision.
The accident happened near Papa John's Road on Highway 11, south of Temagami. A resident living close by says highway conditions were terrible at the crash site with glare ice on the pavement.
OPP's Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) and the Office of the Chief Coroner - Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are helping with the ongoing investigation.
Earlier this week, Mushkegowuk-James Bay MPP Guy Bourgouin said he's reintroducing a private member's bill that would make winter driving safer on Highway 11 and 17.
It would require classifying the northern highways the same as the 400 series highways, where there are strict snow removal requirements.
The next step, said Bourgouin, would be a 2+1 highway system in the north. It's a three-lane road with continuous, alternating passing lanes at regular intervals to prevent long lines of traffic behind slower vehicles and reduce unsafe passing.
