A local cricket tournament wrapped up on Sunday, with the Timmins Tigers in the final.

While the local team came in second place at this year's second annual Mayor’s Cup tournament, Timmins Tigers manager Deepak Datta said the weekend was a success.

“It was an amazing event,” Datta said in an email to TimminsToday. “Unfortunately, we lost finals but won the runners-up trophy.”

Mayor Michelle Boileau presented the trophies for the winning team and the runners-up on Sunday (July 7).She also opened the tournament at the inauguration on Saturday.

Teams from all over Ontario, including Sudbury and Toronto, were in town for the tournament.

The Timmins Tigers won three matches during the tournament to reach the final, but they lost in the final match.

“Hopefully, we win next time,” said Datta.

The Timmins Tiger Cricket Club has grown since its founding in 2016. Before the 2023 season, the City of Timmins opened an indoor cricket batting cage at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex for the team, and the Tigers have hosted multiple tournaments since.

The next big event for the team and cricket in Timmins is the Northern Ontario Cup, which will take place Aug. 24-26 at Northern College.
