'There’s something for everybody': Families take in Timmins Fall Fair

'We wish it was a little warmer, but it’s been a lot of fun'

TIMMINS - Despite the cold and rain, the fall fair is in full swing.

Since the Timmins Fall Fair opened at 8 a.m. this Saturday morning (Sept. 7), a steady stream of people has been checking out exhibits, petting animals, playing games, and even throwing axes.

“The weather might not be beautiful, but everything else is beautiful,” said Porcupine District Agricultural Society president Rock Whissell. “Seeing all these families enjoying themselves, and the petting zoos, the displays, there’s something for everybody.”

Herding dogs braved the cold weather to show off their skills in the paddock behind the Mountjoy Arena, and visitors could get up close and personal with sheep, goats, a donkey, and a llama in the petting zoo.

All activities on the grounds are free after entry.

Timmins Firefighters and EMS were on-site showing off their trucks and equipment to children of all ages.

Paramedics are also there to help the Rotary Club of Timmins stuff an ambulance full of stuffed animals for children in need.

“We’ve had lots of kids check out the truck. They were a little hesitant at first because we’re a little scarier than the firefighters. They’re always the fan favourite,” said Holly McGregor. “We wish it was a little warmer, but it’s been a lot of fun.”

As of 2 p.m. on Saturday, they’d collected over 230 stuffed animals.

Three-year-old Sawyer Scafe was thrilled that he got a chance to sit in a fire truck.

“It’s the best,” he said while running to his mom.

Chris Huot, the firefighter helping kids into the ladder truck, said the cold weather wasn’t slowing the children’s interest.

The exhibitors’ work showed just how talented and dedicated people in Timmins are, said Timmins MPP George Pirie.

“The number of people who are showing up is incredible,” he said. “The produce is amazing, and it just shows how rich the soil is around Timmins and how high the quality of people is.”

The event runs until 6 p.m. on Saturday, with concerts starting at 7 p.m. in the big tent.
