The Black River-Matheson Fire Department responded to nearly 80 calls in 2023.
In a report brought forward at a Matheson council meeting on Tuesday (Jan. 23), Fire Chief Guy Lamb said there were a total of 79 calls last year.
In total, 62 of the 79 calls were reported to the Office of the Fire Marshal. Of the 62, 18 were motor vehicle accidents (MVA), 13 were wildland fires and six were vehicle fires.
Other reasons include structure fires (3), carbon monoxide (2), false alarms (4), medical (1), natural gas leak or smell (4), other (3), chimney fires (3) and out-of-jurisdiction (5).
Non-reportable calls totalled 17.
In December, the fire department responded to six calls.
According to the report, there are 13 active firefighters in Matheson. Two resigned and there are two recruits.
There are nine active firefighters in Val Gagne.
There are 11 active firefighters in Ramore. One is on leave due to courses out-of-town and one is on maternity leave.
Lamb said a substantial highlight for the year was receiving a new fire truck on Dec. 6.
