Building across from Timmins emergency shelter demolished

26 vacant buildings have been registered with the city under a new bylaw

A vacant building across from Timmins emergency shelter has been torn down.

Earlier this week, demolition crews tore down the 323 Spruce St. S. residence where in recent years people often gathered across from Living Space. The building was demolished under the property standards bylaw, says the City of Timmins.

To address vacant buildings, earlier this year a new vacant building bylaw and registry went into effect.

It requires property owners with buildings that have been vacant for more than 30 days to register it with the city. The cost to register a property for a year is $300 for the first year, with that fee increasing to $600 annually after.

To date, 26 vacant buildings have been registered and the city says several orders have also been issued.

"We provided a grace period so that property owners could provide us with the applications; however, that time has lapsed and we are now actively enforcing the vacant building registry," said corporate communications co-ordinator Amanda Dyer.

More information on the vacant building bylaw and registry is available here.
