OTTAWA — Groups or organizations in the Timmins-James Bay region are being asked to apply for the federal government’s Enabling Accessibility Fund. The fund is designed to help develop projects aimed at improving accessibility for people with disabilities.

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says this is a chance to renovate or remodel your facilities. “Whether you are a community group or a municipal operation, there are funds available to help offset costs. If you have been thinking of upgrading to meet the accessibility challenge, I would recommend applying for this fund.”

Eligible projects include:

  • renovating, retrofitting or constructing community facilities where programs and/or services are offered to people with disabilities;
  • retrofitting motor vehicles used as community-based transportation; and,
  • providing information and communications technologies to make them more accessible for the community.

Angus says arenas, community halls and parks are often in need of upgrading facilities in order to make them more accessible.

“You may be looking at enhancing access to recreational space for seniors and or children with disabilities for example. But you could also apply for funding to be able to purchase a vehicle to help your organization move the disabled more conveniently.”

The deadline to apply is April 27th, 2015. To obtain more information about this program, contact Service Canada by telephone at 1-800-O-Canada (1-800-622-6232) or by email using the online contact form.
