A fundraising campaign for the Croatian Hall in Schumacher is going strong.
The Help Save the Hall, Buy Bricks in the Wall fundraiser was launched in late September to keep the historical hall open.
So far the organization has raised almost $37,000. About 100 people have donated from all across Canada and the U.S, said board member Kathy Vukobratic.
The goal is to raise about $150,000.
“Everybody seems to have some kind of tie to the hall or from the past … We’re really appreciative of what we’ve accomplished so far, and it’s only been a short time," Vukobratic said.
The Venture Centre and Tisdale Bus Lines have each added $5,000 to the campaign as well.
Ron Malette, president of Tisdale Bus Lines, said the hall is a “critical part” of the community and the bus company wanted to support it.
“We have attended events here and the people that built this facility, going back 70-80 years, were instrumental in building Schumacher,” he said.
The Venture Centre provided money through its relief fund, created to support communities and non-for-profits in their recovery efforts post COVID-19, said Venture Centre executive director Roxanne Daoust.
“Through the application process, we received 19 applications and we were able to support 18 of them for a total of $107,000,” she said. “So, this was one of the successful applicants and we’re really happy to be able to support their program.”
Starting this Saturday, the Croatian Society is going to start making about 360 dozen cabbage rolls for sale. The rolls won’t be ready for delivery for a few more weeks, Vukobratic said, but people can email her at [email protected] to place an order ahead of time.
