Filipino street festival fills bellies with free lunch

While the last two years were rained out, this year's street festival got a little sunshine

The third annual Filipino Fiesta filled Cedar Street with food and music today.

The event managed to avoid the rainy weather that has sent them inside for the last two years, and performers and volunteers from the Filipino community celebrated their culture in Timmins.

People travelled all the way from Toronto to join the celebration this year. Members of the community in Timmins were up last night preparing food and last-minute things for the festival, which runs until 3 p.m. today (Aug. 10).

"This is what the community is like," said Estela Chow, who organized the event. "We come together."

The event was attended by Mayor Michelle Boileau, Coun. Cory Robin and Timmins-MPP George Pirie.
