TIMMINS - The provincial election is officially underway.

The writ for the Ontario election drops today (Jan. 29), with Ontarians at the polls on Feb. 27.

In Timmins, two candidates are on the ballot so far.

Progressive Conservative George Pirie was the first to confirm he was entering the race.

A retired mining executive, Pirie is the former Timmins mayor who left that post in 2022 to run provincially. He won the Timmins riding seat and was soon after named the Minister of Mines. At a Timmins PC Riding Association meeting in November, Pirie was acclaimed as the candidate for the next Ontario election.

For the first time in three decades, there will be a new name for the NDP on the ballot.

Corey Lepage was acclaimed as the Timmins NDP candidate earlier this month. He has a business degree from Université de Hearst and this is his first foray into politics. He replaces longtime NDP MPP Gilles Bison, who was ousted by Pirie in the 2022 election.

The Liberals and Green Party have not named candidates for Timmins yet.
