Timmins Tigers Cricket Club is roaring to bring the Mayor’s Cup home this weekend.

The club is hosting the second annual Mayor’s Cup tournament on July 6 and 7 at Ferdinand Tremblay Park. Teams are coming to town from Sudbury, Thunder Bay, and Toronto.

Team manager Deepak Datta says the players are ready to face all the challenges on their home pitch.

“They’ll be playing here, they’ll be staying here, and that’s good for the sports tourism in Timmins and the growth of cricket in town,” said Datta.

The Timmins Tigers have been training at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex over the winter. They placed second at a tournament in Sudbury last weekend.

“That has really boosted the morale of the team,” said Datta. “The team is very confident and they are raring to go and show their skill sets here and bring the Mayor’s Cup to Timmins.”

Datta said they’re looking forward to hosting the other teams, especially now that the city has repaired the grounds at Ferdinand Tremblay Park.

“We had a creek where the balls used to go and we’d lose balls in there,” he said. “They did their best to fix the grounds to the standards. That has helped us a lot while playing our practice matches.”

The first Mayor’s Cup took place in 2023 and was won by the Sault Ste Marie Stormers.

This year, seven matches are scheduled over the weekend, with the official inauguration on Saturday at 11 a.m. and the awards ceremony on Sunday between 5 and 5:30 p.m.

“They will see the combinations of skill, the team helping each other and fighting for this prestigious trophy,” said Datta.

More details about the tournament are available on the team’s Facebook page.
