More bears are being spotted in Iroquois Falls area

IROQUOIS FALLS - With a lack of natural food in the bush, more bears are being spotted in town.

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is reporting an increased number of bear sightings in and around the Town of Iroquois Falls.

"Of these reported incidents, the majority have involved items such as garbage, recycling, apple trees and bird feeders," reads the Oct. 8 news release.

The natural foods in the area currently available for bears are rated as "poor", says the ministry. That means that bears are looking for alternative food sources. If bears cannot access non-natural foods such as garbage, the ministry says the animals won't stay in the area.

"It's important to note that the same bear can result in multiple sightings. The Ontario government is reminding the public that bears are often attracted to things such as garbage, bird food — including suet, seed and nectar, odours from barbecues, and ripe fruit left on trees or the ground. Removing these attractants can help keep bears out of the area," says the MNR.

The Bear Wise reporting line can be reached at 1-866-514-2327. During bear season, which runs to Nov. 30, you'll be connected with a live operator and can also get advice on removing bear attractants.

If you spot a bear, call 911 if it poses an immediate threat to public safety or is showing signs of threatening or aggressive behaviour.
