Nearly $385K of drugs, 26 long guns seized near Matheson

APITIPI ANICINAPEK NATION - Over $385,000 in drugs and dozens of long guns were seized by police in a First Nation community near Matheson. 

On Thusday (Nov. 7), Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) executed search warrants obtained as part of a suspected drug trafficking activity investigation at a residence on Concession Road in Apitipi Anicinapek Nation.

When police entered the home, a male suspect was arrested. When a female relative of the suspect arrived at the home, she confronted police officers and despite efforts to de-escalate the situation, police say she assaulted an officer. 

Crystal methamphetamine, methamphetamine pills, fentanyl, cocaine, Ritalin, oxycodone, MDMA, 26 long guns — including a sawed-off shotgun — cash, and drug trafficking paraphernalia were seized by police. The estimated street value of the drugs is more than $385,000.

Jay Babib, 30, of Apitipi Anicinapek Nation is charged with:

  • Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Two counts of possession of Methamphetamine for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of Fentanyl for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of Oxycodone for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of N-Methyl-3,4-Methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDMA) for the Purpose of Trafficking 
  • Possession of Methylphenidate (Ritalin) for the Purpose of Trafficking 
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Firearm
  • Careless Storage of a Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition 
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 

The 50-year-old female relative is from Matheson and charged with assaulting a peace officer. She has been released from custody and will appear in court at a later date. 

Babin appeared in bail court on today (Nov. 8) and was released with conditions, and a future court date.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
