Public Health Ontario has reported 4,227 new cases of COVID-19 today (April 9).
This is the second-highest number of cases reported in a single day by the province. On Jan. 8, the daily report included 4,249 cases, but that report noted some of the cases were added as a result of a data catch-up by Toronto Public Health and were not all new cases.
Today's report includes 2,641 recoveries and 18 new deaths.
The deaths reported today include two people between 40 and 59 years old, nine people between 60 and 79 years old, and seven people over the age of 79 years old.
The province has reported 201 new hospitalizations since yesterday, and 31 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.
The April 9 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:
- 29,627 active cases, which is up from 28,059 yesterday
- 1,492 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,417 reported yesterday.
- There are 552 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 525 yesterday) and 359 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 331 reported yesterday)
- The province reported 61,410 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 6.3 per cent positivity rate.
- Another 42,572 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 12.9 million tests have been completed.
- Of the 4,227 new cases reported today, 1,218 are from Toronto, 762 cases are from Peel, 532 are from York Region, and 96 are from Simcoe-Muskoka
- There are 58 active outbreaks at long-term care homes, 41 at retirement homes, and 41 at hospitals.
- The new cases reported today include 799 individuals aged 19 and under, 1,599 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,229 people between 40 and 59 years old, 542 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 57 people aged 80 and over.
Vaccines
- There were 105,382 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 8, which is down from 108,563 doses on April 7.
- As of 6 p.m. on April 8, the province reported 2,940,166 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
- In total, 328,598 people have been fully vaccinated.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 378,339 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 341,200 recoveries and 7,512 deaths, of which 3,905 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,545.3 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.
The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 136.7 cases per 100,000 people, which is an increase of 25.6 per cent from last week (March 24-30).
In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:
- Algoma Public Health: 254 cases, rate of 222 per 100,000 people. There are 26 known active cases. There are three confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant of concern. Three tests have screened positive for a variant of concern but the strain is not known yet.
- North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 306 cases, rate of 235.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 308 cases. There are 16 known active cases. There have been 17 confirmed cases of the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7) variant, and 27 confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are 21 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet.
- Porcupine Health Unit: 392 cases, rate of 469.8 per 100,000 people. There are 32 known active cases. There have been two confirmed cases of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There are two tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet.
- Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 1,611 cases, rate of 809.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,619. There are 262 known active cases. There have been 10 confirmed UK (B.1.1.7) variants of concern. There are 474 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet.
- Timiskaming Health Unit: 130 cases, rate of 397.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 131 cases. There are four known active cases. There have been 20 confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. There has been one case of the South African (B.1.351) variant of concern. There is one test where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet.
- Northwestern Health Unit: 729 cases, rate of 831.5 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 730 cases. There are 45 known active cases. There have been five confirmed cases of the UK (B.1.1.7) variant. There are 15 tests where variants have been detected but the strain is not known yet.
- Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 2,936 cases, rate of 1957.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,949 cases. There are 101 known active cases. There are four tests where a variant has been detected but the strain is not known yet.
