With a popular tourist attraction experiencing challenges, there’s no word yet on when it will open again.

The Hollinger Open Pit Lookout has been closed recently due to operational issues, said Gerry Stinson, Newmont Porcupine sustainability and external relations manager. There isn’t a solid timeline on when they will be reopening.

“We continue to have some challenges within the Hollinger Open Pit, which have resulted in us having to close the lookout,” he said in an email to TimminsToday. “The challenges are operationally related and do not pose any risk to the community.”

Stinson is hopeful the challenges will be overcome promptly.

“We are working through them and hope to have the lookout back open to the public in the near future,” he said.

The Hollinger Outlook is usually open to the public from June 1 to Sept. 30, except when blasting is taking place.

The outlook first opened in 2019 for a four-day event and opened again in 2022. Work on the site started in 2016.

The 360-degree view of the city and the mine will be back, said Stinson.

“I do want to confirm that once the operational challenges are resolved, the lookout will be open again to the general public,” he said.
