Paul Charette, Liz Bohdanec, Christy Marinig and Noella Rinaldo from the Timmins Film Society announced the lineup for this year's film festival on Nov. 1.

TIMMINS - Movie lovers will have a busy week in November.

The lineup for the fourth annual Timmins Film Festival has been revealed and includes a movie filmed in Northern Ontario. The popular event that screens movies that usually don't hit the local big screen runs from Thursday, Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 10.

“We do this all because we love movies,” said Paul Charette, who's with the Timmins Film Society, which hosts the festival.

All shows will take place at Imagine Cinema on Cedar Street South. Tickets are $12 each and are available online

A ticket to any shows during the festival gets you access to the gala wine and cheese event at the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre on Friday, Nov. 8, following the showing of 500 Days in the Wild. The event will let movie lovers gather and share information, said Charette.

“It’s more of a coming together of movie fans where they can come and chat about the movie they’ve just seen, different movies they’ve seen this year,” he said. “We can just chat and talk about movies and films in general.”

This year’s festival includes a French film, ru, which follows a wealthy refugee family from Vietnam to Montreal, and an Indigenous film, Cafe Daughter, a coming-of-age story set in 1960s Saskatchewan. It was also filmed in Sudbury.

“If we can bring in these types of movies for them, it’s great because then they don’t have to go to Sudbury, they don’t have to go to North Bay, to all the other locations to see these movies,” said Charette. “We have them right here in our backyard.”

The films are selected by the committee and geared to what people in town want to see.

“We’ve got a vast difference in movies, and that’s how we figure this out,” said Charette.

The film society will highlight the films in the festival on its Facebook page.

Committee member Christy Marinig said that the festival and the society’s regular weekly features are a great chance to try something new.

“We definitely encourage everyone to try a movie if you say, ‘Oh, I’m not sure I’m going to like that movie.’ That’s part of the film festival,” she said. “Try out something you normally wouldn’t maybe go see. Just try that experience.”

The full line-up is:

  • Nov. 7, 7 p.m. - Perfect Days
  • Nov. 8m, 7 p.m. - 500 Days in the Wild
  • Nov. 9, 1 p.m. - Cafe Daughter
  • Nov. 9, 7 p.m. - ru
  • Nov 10, 1 p.m.  - Thelma

The committee is always looking for suggestions for future shows.

“Let me know what movies you want us to bring in. Some of them we might not be in the know,” said Charette.

The Timmins Film Society is run by volunteers and offers weekly movies on Mondays at 7 p,m. They are also offering classics like The Wizard of Oz this season. Information about upcoming shows is available on the society’s Facebook page.
