TIMMINS - When the snow finally flies, and snowmobiles hit the trails there's a new route through a city park.

Timmins council has awarded a $51,299 contract to M&G Fencing to install new fencing at Hollinger Park.

As part of this year's Connecting Link road reconstruction project, the former rail bridge on Algonquin Boulevard was removed. Because it was being used as a snowmobile crossing, a new road-level crossing with lights was installed in front of the park.

The City has been working with the Timmins Snowmobile Club to create a better trail to access the crossing, director of growth and infrastructure Scott Tam told council on Tuesday (Oct. 15).

The new trail goes east at Water Tower Road and behind the grandstands to reconnect to Hollinger Park and the crossing.

To allow for the changes, about 116 metres of the current chain link fence is being removed and 347 metres of new fencing is being installed. Two gates are also being installed to maintain access to the park's event area.

While Tam briefly talked about the project at the meeting, there were no comments from council.

The project is not in the 2024 parks and recreation budget, which means the extra cost will go towards the city's year-end surplus/deficit.
