A special Timmins council meeting today is looking at changing the contract for runway upgrades at the airport.

In June, Miller Paving was awarded a $7.5-million contract for the rehabilitation and resurfacing of two runways — 03-21 and 10-28 — at the Victor M. Power Airport.

Staff is recommending adding an additional 25 millimetres of asphalt to the runways, which would add $1.9 million to the project budget.

When the original project was approved last month, council gave staff the go-ahead to look at pricing to add more ashpalt to the runways.

According to the staff report, the original work is for 100 mm, which is based on the aircraft currently using the airport. Recently, the largest and heaviest aircraft scheduled for service was a Dash 8 Q-400.

The option staff is recommending, would increase the asphalt thickness on 03-21, and defer work on runway 10-28 to June 2021 "to minimize the schedule risk associated with October construction."
