TIMMINS - A bus route to the east end of the city is returning.

Earlier this month, the City of Timmins rolled out a pilot project for Timmins Transit on-demand. Bus riders have voiced concerns about wait times, bus availability "and what some considered to be an added barrier to accessing public transit," said the City of Timmins in a news release.

The familiar bus route returns on Oct. 1.

“It’s important to note that Timmins Transit on-demand service is not going away,” said Ken Krcel, director of public works and environmental services, in a news release.

“The booking system has been successfully used for paratransit service since February. The expanded coverage area, including Connaught Hill and Bob’s Lake, will still have public transit. Any resident who prefers microtransit service can continue to use Transit On-Demand. We will also look at ways it can be used in other underserviced areas across Timmins."

When Route 16 returns, the Route 101E bus that is running every 15 minutes between Timmins and Porcupine will stop. Route 16B is not returning.

Route 16 leaves the Timmins Transit terminal every 30 minutes and serves Schumacher, South Porcupine and Porcupine from Monday to Saturday between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Sunday service runs from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The stops on Route 16 are Father Costello and Hollinger, Northern College, Earl and Conley, the South Porcupine terminal, and Highway 101 West and the McIntyre Community Centre.
