Timmins is this year's most active community in the province.

The City of Timmins took part in the fifth edition of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, which is a national competition that urges people to get active throughout June.

While Hay River, Northwest Territories, took the top prize in Canada, Timmins was crowned the most active community in Ontario. The honour comes with a $7,500 cheque to support physical activity and sports initiatives.

"I can’t overstate the importance of accessible and affordable recreation and activity on the health and well-being of a community,” said Mayor Michelle Boileau in a news release. “The ParticipACTION Community Challenge gave us all a common goal, opportunities for social interaction, helped us support inclusive sports and activity events, and celebrate our community spaces, like parks and trails."

For the win, the city says that 38 organizations registered 128 programs or activities in June that were attended by 55,117 participants.

The city's recreation department and community safety and well-being team are working together to decide how to use the prize money.
