TIMMINS.- A popular tourist attraction is on track to reopen after being closed for the past couple of months.
The Hollinger Open Pit Lookout is reopening to the public today (Monday, Sept. 9) at 8 a.m.
"The lookout was closed in June after observations of increased movement on the wall of the open pit. Newmont Porcupine would like you to know there is no risk to the community and operations are expected to resume in the open pit in October," reads the Newmont Porcupine news release.
This year, the company added a bust of Benjamin (Benny) Hollinger, who discovered the historic gold mine in 1909.
Hollinger was just 24 years old when he discovered the Timmins gold mine on a trip with Alex Gillies (whom Gillies Lake is named for). It was the world’s largest producer of gold from 1910 to 1968.

The lookout is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except during blasting times.
It's located off of Brunette Road at the end of Shania Twain Drive. It closes for the season after Thanksgiving weekend.
