Tweens can learn the basics of photography for free at an upcoming workshop.

Digital Creator and the Timmins Public Library have teamed up for a three-day outdoor photography workshop Aug. 20 - 22 for youth ages nine to 13 years.

Each session runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will be at the library Aug. 20 and 22, with the Aug. 21 workshop at Gillies Lake.

“They have a lot of children’s programs at the library and the older age group, they wanted to do something really special with them to get them engaged in an activity they can do outside. Photography is a great one to get them out and looking at things in nature and paying attention to what’s around them,” explained Digital Creator's Heidi Vandenbroeke.

The sessions, she said, will include the basics on how to use a camera, how to compose a photo and overcoming challenges of taking pictures outside. On the final day, she said they'll also share tips on how to edit or touch up photos.

“We’re providing some cameras, we’re providing some iPads and tablets as well because we don’t have a large number of cameras. A few have said they would like to bring their own camera or device and that’s encouraged, especially if they’re familiar with it,” she said.

For the Gillies Lake session, parental supervision is required for children ages nine and 10 years.

To register for the workshops, call the library at 705-360-2623 ext. 8519.
