Two CL215s and a birddog aircraft from Quebec were supporting aerial fire suppression operations on the fire 'Kirkland Lake 5' on Tuesday, the MNRF says. The fire measures about 195 hectares.

Fire officials are reporting that two new wildland fires — both of them just 0.1 hectare, with one already out — were confirmed in the Northeast Region by early evening on Thursday.

One of the fires was in the Timmins district and the other in Algonquin Park.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services Northeast Fire Region says the fires are:

  • Algonquin Park 2 (APK002), a 0.1 hectare fire that is now out. This fire was located in the southern part of Algonquin Provincial Park, about 20 km west of Maynooth.
  • Timmins 10 (TIM010), a 0.1 hectare fire that is not yet under control. This fire is on McArthur Lake, about 50 km northwest of Matachewan.

The AFFES said at the time of Thursday's update, there were 25 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region in various stages of control: two were not yet under control, one was being held, three were under control and 19 were being observed.

The fire hazard was predominantly moderate to high for most of the Northeast Region, the AFFES says.

Areas north of Blind River to Mississagi River Provincial Park and around Spanish River Provincial Park, Greater Sudbury, Temiskaming Shores and Latchford were under an extreme fire hazard.

There was a low fire hazard along the Highway 11 corridor east of Smooth Rock Falls and going north along the James Bay coast. The fire hazard varied from moderate to high along the Hudson Bay coast.
