14 charges laid in Kapuskasing domestic incident that led to 8-hour police negotiation

The accused was arrested after receiving medical treatment

KAPUSKASING - One person is facing more than a dozen charges after a domestic disturbance that led to an eight-hour police negotiation. 

On Nov. 18 around 10:45 a.m., James Bay OPP was called to a barricaded person at an Algonquin Street resident in Kapuskasing. 

The OPP emergency response team (ERT), crisis negotiators, crime unit and critical incident command were at the scene to help with the investigation. As a precaution, area schools were told about the investigation and were put under hold and secure procedures

Around 7 p.m. on Nov. 18, police said one person was brought to the hospital by ambulance for assessment and care. 

After receiving medical care, the person was arrested on Dec. 8. Police are not naming the suspect to protect the identity of the victim. A 44-year-old from Moonbeam is charged with:

  • Break, enter a place - with intent to commit an indictable offence
  • Firearm - use while committing an offence
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • 2 counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous person
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • 3 counts of failure to comply with probation order
  • 4 counts of failure to comply with undertaking
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine

The accused is in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Kapuskasing on Dec. 11.
