MATHESON - Two people from Quebec are facing charges after $50,000 in copper wire was stolen.
On Feb. 20 around 1:30 a.m., Iroquois Falls OPP responded to a theft in progress on Vimy Ridge Road in Matheson. While the suspects fled the scene, police located them shortly after.
Police say one of the suspects is also responsible for two other Matheson thefts, on Sept. 14, 2024, and Feb. 14, 2025. The estimated value of the theft is $50,000.
A 56-year-old man from Rochebaucourt, Quebec, is charged with:
- 3 counts of theft over $5,000
- 3 counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- 3 counts of mischief over $5,000
A 47-year-old man from Point Aux Outardes, Quebec, is charged with:
- Theft Over $5,000
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Fail to comply with probation order
- Mischief over $5,000
Both of the accused have been released from police custody and have a March 13 court date in Timmins.
None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
