TIMMINS - The remaining charges against a Timmins doctor have been stayed, marking the end of a high-profile case that made local headlines.
Dr. Ali Mahmoudi, an orthopedic surgeon who had privileges at Timmins and District Hospital, was in a Timmins court in October.
At the appearance, Justice Lynn Ann Grzela "found that the conduct of the Crown had compromised the fairness of the trial," said Matthew Gourlay, a partner at Henein Hutchinson Robitaille, the Toronto law firm representing Mahmoudi.
Mahmoudi was originally charged with 10 offences by Timmins Police in July 2023, including two counts each of assault, sexual assault and sexual assault causing bodily harm. Later that year, he was charged with 11 additional offences.
In July 2023, the original 10 charges were withdrawn by the Crown attorney.
In June 2024, Gourlay said Mahmoudi was acquitted of six charges after a trial. The remaining charges were stayed by Justice Lynn Ann Grzela in October, bringing the case to an end.
"In short, the charges against Dr. Mahmoudi have concluded with his presumption of innocence intact," said Gourlay.
