COCHRANE - Having an automated licence plate reader in a police cruiser led to an impaired driver being taken off the road.
Around 6 a.m. this morning (Jan. 23), a James Bay OPP cruiser's automated license plate recognition (ALPR) system flagged a suspended driver. The officer pulled the vehicle over on Second Avenue in Cochrane.
Police determined the driver had been drinking, which led to them being arrested and brought to the Cochrane detachment for further testing.
A 31-year-old woman from Cochrane is charged with operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and driving while under suspension.
The accused was released from custody and is slated to appear in court in Cochrane on Feb. 11. Their driver's licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
