Murder charge laid in missing person investigation

The remains of the Kirkland Lake woman have not been found, however, OPP has charged a 40-year-old with first-degree murder

A murder charge has been laid in a Kirkland Lake missing person case.

Ashley Lafrance was reported missing on Sept. 9, 2022. The 29-year-old was last seen on Station Road in Kirkland Lake on Sept. 7.

While her remains have not been located, 40-year-old Darcy Shail of Kirkland Lake has been charged with first-degree murder. It's a charge laid when the homicide is planned and deliberate.

Earlier this month, Kirkland Lake OPP conducted public searches for Lafrance and urged residents to check their properties and outbuildings.

The investigation is ongoing. It's being led by the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch with help from the Emergency Response Team and Canine Unit.
