OPP probes fatal collision on Highway 11 near Smooth Rock Falls

One person died when two commercial vehicles crashed on Highway 11 west of Smooth Rock Falls.

The James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 11 near Red Pine Road, approximately five km west of Smooth Rock Falls. The collision involved a head-on crash between two commercial motor vehicles (CMVs).

On Jan. 17 at approximately 9:30 p.m., the James Bay OPP, Cochrane District Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and the Smooth Rock Falls Fire Department responded to the collision.

One driver, a 57-year-old from Sainte-Eulalie, QC, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the second CMV suffered life threatening, life altering injuries and was transported to hospital via ambulance.

The OPP's Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team is assisting with this ongoing investigation.

Highway 11 was closed in both directions for approximately 16 hours but has since reopened as of 1:30 p.m.
