Rifle-wielding man charged, says police

CONSTANCE LAKE - A man allegedly walking around with a rifle in a Northern Ontario community is facing charges. 

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) says the incident happened on Monday (Sept. 23) afternoon in Constance Lake First Nation. 

The call was for a man openly carrying a rifle in the community located northwest of Hearst.

NAPS says officers went to the area where the suspect had been seen last. He was located and arrested without incident. OPP officers also responded to the call to provide support.

Justin William Legarde, 30, of Constance Lake First Nation is charged with: 

  • Carry firearm, prohibited device or ammunition in careless manner
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose 
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Breach of recognizance

The accused was held for a bail hearing today (Sept. 24) and released from police custody. 

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
