Police are investigating a murder after a man died in a Schumacher apartment early this morning.
The incident happened on Father Costello Drive in a house on the north side of the road with multiple apartment units. A neighbour called Timmins Police around 1:30 a.m. after hearing gunshots, said Timmins Police communications co-ordinator Marc Depatie.
Officers found three people in an apartment, one person died at the scene, said Depatie.
The other two people — a man and a woman — were brought to Timmins and District Hospital with gunshot wounds.
“To my knowledge their current status is listed as critical,” he said.
Police are working to confirm the identity of the victim.
“We are 90 per cent sure we know who we’re dealing with, but that has to be determined through forensic identification and the coroner’s office determining the exact identity of the deceased,” he said.
A suspect is in police custody in connection with the investigation.
Depatie said police are working under the premise that the people involved were familiar with each other.
The shooting is an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety at this point.
“Our premise that we’re working under right now is that this is part of the drug subculture in the Timmins area and an interaction took place between individuals and obviously it turned to a level of violence that is not typical for Timmins, but nonetheless has occurred and the physical evidence left at the scene as well as any evidence that we can get from independent witnesses will determine how this interaction took place.”
