South Porcupine teen killed in crash near Thunder Bay

Two other people were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries

A resident of South Porcupine, Ont., died in a collision on Highway 11/17 at Dorion on Tuesday.

DORION — A resident of South Porcupine, Ont., died Tuesday in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 11/17 at Dorion, east of Thunder Bay.

Ontario Provincial Police identified the victim as 18-year-old Haydn Charbonneau.

Police said two pickup trucks collided at about 5 p.m. near the Dorion Loop Road.

Charbonneau, who was driving one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Other people had to be extricated from the vehicles, and two individuals were taken to the hospital with undetermined injuries.

The highway was closed for several hours.

OPP continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

Responding emergency services also included the Dorion/Hurkett Volunteer Fire Department, neighbouring fire services, and Superior North EMS.

So far this year, three people have died on Highways 11/17 in Northern Ontario. 

Yesterday there was a fatal crash near Swan Lake. Last week, a North Bay man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 11 near Sand Dam road. In 2022 in northeastern Ontario, at least 10 people were killed on the stretch of Highway 11 between Hearst and North Bay.

Earlier this week, three NDP MPP's renewed their call to the Ford government to improve winter highway conditions in Northern Ontario.
