ATTAWAPISKAT - A teen who wielded a gun during an altercation is facing several charges.

The incident happened the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 30 in Attawapiskat, said Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) in a news release.

Officers were called to a residence in the remote First Nation on the James Bay coast. During an altercation between an adult man and male youth, the youth brandished a knife before fleeing the scene.

The accused and victim are known to each other, police say.

A 17-year-old from Attawapiskat is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.

The name of the accused can't be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He was held for a bail hearing on Aug. 31 and was released. He'll appear in court again at a later date.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
