In keeping with its ongoing commitment to enhancing traffic safety, and in response to numerous traffic complaints received concerning speeding on Hwy 101 as it enters South Porcupine, the Timmins Police Service engaged in speeding violations initiative last week.

As a result this enforcement presence campaign, a number of motorists had their respective driving behaviors addressed by means of the issuance of offence notices. The traffic initiative undertaken on Monday, Feb. 24, focused on the stretch of Hwy 101 that enters South Porcupine at key hours of the day where pedestrian traffic is at a peak.

The intersection of Harold at Moore was identified as a key area for enforcement attention as high school students and senior citizens commonly cross the roadway at this location. A total of ten speeding offences resulted in charges being laid with speeds ranging from 25 to 28 kilometers per hour over the posted speed limit being noted. Motorists who chose to breach the speed limit were observed travelling in both the easterly direction and west bound as well.

One motorist was charged for using a handheld communications device (cell phone) while driving in this targeted area. Two others were charged for driving with expired licence plate validations, while another was charged for having an expired insurance card.

The Timmins Police Service is actively engaged in contributing manpower and resources towards the shared goal of safer roadways in Timmins.

Traffic Sergeant Tom Chypyha adds “The responsibility to drive safely rests squarely on the shoulders of the individual driver. Failure to police your own driving behavior leaves little room for leniency in those areas where the public has expressed its concern. We are aware and we are responding to these concerns.”
