TIMMINS - Two abandoned encampments were cleared by City of Timmins crews today.
The tents at Hollinger Park and in the laneway behind Living Space on Spruce Street South were cleared up by enforcement services and public works, the City of Timmins announced in a news release.
"The efforts were a continuation of work to mitigate some of the waste generated at both sites throughout the summer and fall over concerns about poor sanitation and public safety," reads the notice.
"No individuals were removed from either location. Both sites had been previously abandoned as cold weather settles in and people seek shelter indoors. Any tents or structures still in use have not been removed."
The city says it's ensuring that outreach services are available to connect people with the services required.
With overnight temperatures expected to drop to -27 C, an extreme cold weather alert is in effect.
People who need emergency shelter can go to 316 Spruce St. S.
