KIRKLAND LAKE - Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake has declared a COVID-19 outbreak.
What was a suspected outbreak on its Teck Unit moved to a confirmed outbreak, according to a Facebook post published by the organization on Monday (Jan. 22).
There are currently eight residents who have tested positive, six symptomatic residents awaiting a swab test result and three residents showing no symptoms but who have been in close contact with symptomatic residents.
“All symptomatic residents are displaying respiratory symptoms such as hoarse voice, sore throat, runny nose and cough. All affected residents have been isolated since their symptoms appeared and are being monitored closely,” they wrote.
“Family members of those residents who are displaying symptoms have been contacted already.”
The outbreak is currently limited to one unit. All residents on the unit have been placed on precautionary quarantine to their rooms with tray service for meals and snacks, as well as one-on-one programming. No off-unit activities will be allowed at this time.
“All residents on the Teck Unit will be assessed for any signs and symptoms twice daily. If any symptoms are noted, the resident will be isolated and tested immediately,” the organization wrote.
While there are currently no restrictions for visitors, visitors are being asked to refrain from visiting the home if they are feeling ill. Visitors will be required to wear an N-95 mask.
“All visitors are required to do passive screening upon entering the home, completing hand hygiene prior to coming into contact with residents and we ask that you wear a mask for the duration of your visit on all units,” they wrote.
“All visitors entering the Teck unit and visiting a resident who is on isolation will be asked to wear N-95, full PPE and eye protection. All staff working on the Teck Unit will be wearing N-95 masks at all times and eye protection as well as full PPE when working with those in isolation.”
Nursing staff will call and update family members with any changes to resident health, the organization said.
“But also, as always, encourage family members to call the nursing stations if you need more information,” they wrote.
Last week, Extendicare Kirkland Lake similarly declared a COVID-19 outbreak and yesterday (Jan. 22) declared an enteric outbreak.
