TIMMINS - A last-minute council meeting before Christmas is focusing on community safety.

The agenda for tonight's (Dec. 23) meeting is out and includes a presentation from Timmins Police and a report on the Downtown CIP Safety Grant.

There are also four motions. They are:

  • To direct the Cochrane District Services Board to apply for encampment response initiative funding;
  • To support the government in giving police the tools to deal with homeless encampments and crack down on illegal drug usage;
  • To direct staff to do an environmental design safety audit in downtown Timmins to see if enhanced lighting and CCTV are needed; and
  • To have staff prepare a report on the need for security services in downtown Timmins, and recommend how the terms should be included in a tender or request for proposal.

Council's last scheduled meeting of the year was on Dec. 10.

So far this month, there have been two shootings in the downtown area, an assault at the transit station and a series of break-ins at businesses.
