Flood watch issued for Mattagami River (2 photos)

The river is rising and could reach a critical first stage flood level in the coming days, says the Timmins Flood Advisory Committee

A flood watch has been issued for the Mattagami River.

The watch issued by the Timmins Flood Advisory Committee means there is the potential for flooding.

"On the Mattagami River system, water elevations are continuing to rise and could reach the critical first stage flood level over the coming days. Residents at this point in time may experience flooding of low-lying areas," reads a news release from the committee.

Water is elevating on many area rivers and streams with the recent precipitation and melting snow, according to the Timmins Flood Advisory Committee. Because of the substantial amount of snow remaining in outlying areas, the committee expects the upward trend to continue.

People living near lakes and rivers should remove unsecured material and equipment from the shorelines and be prepared with an emergency plan if a flood emergency is declared. Children should also be reminded about the dangers of playing in and around lakes, rivers and streams, said the committee.

In Porcupine and South Porcupine, the committee released a separate statement recently noting that the water level is rising on Porcupine Lake and Porcupine River. The potential for flooding in that area is difficult to predict and will depend on the weather.
