Indigenous awareness training for city employees is moving ahead.

Tuesday, Timmins council approved spending $35,000 for the Indigenous Corporate Training Inc. course to be offered to all city employees and council.

“As part of the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, one of the requirements on municipalities was we provide Indigenous awareness training to our employees,” said clerk Steph Palmateer.

The city's Indigenous Advisory Committee has been looking at training options for staff.

A small group, comprised of Mayor George Pirie, CAO Dave Landers, Coun. Kristin Murray, city clerk Steph Palmateer and several city staff, took the online self-guided training.

“We looked at a number of options for trying to create Timmins-specific training to looking at other existing training models that are out there,” said Palmateer.

With the course, he said staff can take the course at their leisure online because it can be done in segments.

"The training being proposed is thorough and will fulfill the requirement. It is also available online and the licence will be acquired and we will host the training course on our Learning Management System (LMS)," reads Palmateers report.
