An outdoor sports court is getting closer to a reality in Connaught.

A breakfast this weekend is helping the Connaught Community Association get closer to its financial goal. The City of Timmins is also doing its part to help the group make their dreams a reality.

For the past several years, the Connaught Community Association has been raising money for a year-round recreational area for people of all ages. It will be a space to play soccer, basketball and racquet sports during the summer and skate in the winter.

A monthly breakfast this weekend is helping raise money for the project.

On Sunday, Aug. 27 at the Connaught Community Centre, 6825 Frederickhouse Lake Road, there is a full breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon. The last breakfast of the season is Sunday, Sept. 24.

At its last meeting, Timmins council approved the city being a co-applicant on the association's Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) application. The city is also providing in-kind services worth an estimated $25,957 during the construction work.

“The funding application is led by the Connaught Community Association, however, since the city we own the land that the association will be building the court on , the city is required to be a co-applicant on the application,” director of finance Natalie Moore told council.

The in-kind services being provided include locate information, a property survey and identifying the four stakes, accessing improvements to the property, installing new culverts, and project management services.

For a small community, Coun. John Curley talked about all the work that the association has done, from the hall to the playground. He said they've done a wonderful job over the years and encouraged council to support them.

Prior to August support, the city has also committed $80,000 from the municipal accommodation tax (MAT) to the project.
