Get on the ice and try out a new sport this month.
The Timmins Ringette Association is hosting free open houses for youth ages four and up.
Ringette is similar to hockey, though players use a straight stick with no curve and there's a ring instead of a puck. It's also faster than hockey, says the association, and requires more team effort because a player cannot carry the ring across the blue line and must pass it instead.
"Ringette promotes fun, fitness and friendship in a safe play environment with an emphasis on team play and fair play opportunities for all ages. Ringette is typically a female-dominated sport but is open to males who want to join in on the fun," reads a news release.
The bring-a-friend nights are being held at the McIntyre Arena.
The dates and times are:
Monday, Sept. 12
- 6-7 p.m., ages four to seven years
- 7-8 p.m., ages 10 to 13 years
Thursday, Sept. 15
- 6-7 p.m., ages eight to nine years
- 7-8 p.m., ages 14 to 18 years
Regisration is not required. Participants should arrive early in order to be ready to hit the ice on time. Interested players need to bring skates, a helmet, and mittens or gloves.
