ATTAWAPISKAT - A nearly four-hour armed standoff ended with one person being arrested, says police.

The incident unfolded at a Spruce Street house in Attawapiskat yesterday afternoon (Oct. 6). Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) received a call about an armed man barricaded inside of a home, and once on-scene contained the area for public safety.

When police learned that the man was armed with a gun, the NAPS emergency response team was sent to the community.

"After hours of negotiation, the male exited the home, was cleared medically, and then taken into police custody," said NAPS in a news release.

Roland Iahtail, 43, of Attawapiskat is charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, and uttering threats - damage property.

He had a bail hearing today (Oct. 7) and remains in police custody.
