ATTAWAPISKAT - An Attawapiskat man has been charged for sexual assaults that happened over a couple of decades starting in the early '70s, and police believe there may be more victims.
The incidents happened on the James Bay coast in Attawapiskat First Nation and Moosonee, said Nishnawbe Aski Police Service in a news release.
The police investigation started in 2024. Three victims who were allegedly assaulted between 1971 and 1994 have been identified. They were between the ages of four and 17 years at the time of the incidents, said police.
A 67-year-old man from Attawapiskat was arrested and charged on March 18. He's charged with:
- 3 counts of indecent assault
- 3 counts of gross indecency
- 2 counts of sexual assault
- Sexual exploitation
"Members of the NAPS Crime Unit continue to investigate and believe there may be more victims who have yet to come forward," said police in a news release.
The accused was released from police custody with conditions after a bail hearing on March 19.
