APITIPI ANICINAPEK NATION - A driver who was allegedly speeded and driving erratically is facing an impaired charge, says police.

The afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 3, Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) received multiple calls about the driver in Apitipi Anicinapek Nation, which is off Highway 101 between Matheson and the Quebec border.

An officer spotted the suspected vehicle "travelling at a high rate of speed" in the area of Noels Drive and Penatuche Road around 4:30 p.m. that day.

"The officer conducted a traffic stop and approached the driver. During this interaction the officer observed several signs that the driver was possibly impaired. The motorist was arrested for suspected impaired operation of a motor vehicle," said NAPS in a news release.

The driver was brought to the Iroquois Falls OPP detachment to be evaluated by a drug recognition expert.

A 33-year-old female from Apitipi Anicinapek Nation is charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired – alcohol and drugs. NAPS did not release the name of the accused because the charge hasn't been formally sworn in before the courts.

She has been released from custody with conditions and will appear in court at a later date.

None of the charges have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
